GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. In normal digestion, the LES opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus. When the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, it allows the stomach’s contents to flow up into the esophagus, known as heartburn, causing mild to severe pain in the chest beginning behind the breastbone and moving upwards to the neck and throat. It can last up to two hours and has often been mistaken for heart problems. More than 60 million American adults experience heartburn at least once a month and more than 15 million adults suffer daily from heartburn. Dietary and lifestyle choices may contribute to GERD. Certain foods and beverages, including chocolate, fried or fatty foods, coffee or alcoholic drinks may trigger reflux and heartburn. Obesity and pregnancy can also play a role in GERD symptoms. Studies have also shown that cigarette smoking relaxes the LES causing acid relux.

In most cases GERD can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes. At Drs Country Health, we have some formulas that might help. To start with, try taking CHF #94 Betaine Plus before each meal. This formula helps to build the right amount of acid in your stomach for proper digestion. Second, take CHF #17 Digest-Zyme approximately 30 minutes after you eat to continue helping aid digestion. CHF #35 Acidophilus is a good choice too, by keeping the right amount of good bacteria in your stomach. At night, CHF #104 GERD-Sleep, which contains melatonin, may help combat the out breaks of GERD and may also help with sleep. Another benefit that may be received from CHF #104 is that it may help rebuild brain cells during sleep that may have been lost throughout the day due to the use of cellphones and other technology and help prevent future damage.

Scents You Should Know…

EO #28 GINGER

Ginger is a commonly used domestic spice, which has been used as a natural remedy for thousands of years, especially in the East. It forms an integral part of many Asian cuisines due to its digestive properties. It is especially helpful in digesting food items such as meat and poultry and is added while cooking meat as it softens the meat. Fresh Ginger is used a lot in China for several different health problems. Ginger root and ginger oil are also used as preservative and flavoring agent.

Native to south Asia, Ginger is cultivated all over the tropics, particularly in Nigeria, West Indies, China, Jamaica, and Japan. It is a perineal herb that grows up to three feet high. The root is very thick and tuberous. Each year it grows a green narrow spear like leaves and white or yellow flowers. Ginger oil is obtained from the root of the herb Zingiber Officinale. The peculiar hot taste and pungent taste of ginger can be attributed to the presence of an acrid compound called Gingerol. Most of the health benefits of ginger are due to Gingerol. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the dried ground up root.  It is a pale to amber yellow color with a warm woody spicy scent and blends.

Ginger essential oil is used in the treatment of fractures, rheumatism, arthritis, bruising, carbuncles, nausea, hangovers, travel and sea sickness, colds and flu, catarrh, congestion, coughs, sinusitis, sores on the skin, sore throat, diarrhea, colic, cramps, chills and fever. Its tonic action may serve to energize, ground and strengthen you after an illness. Its restorative properties help you to recover when you’re physically and emotionally burnt out, depleted or exhausted.
