Vitamin C and the Common Cold
At the University of Wisconsin they recently studied the affects of vitamin C for the common cold. While vitamin C does not prevent the cold, taking vitamin C cut the symptoms in half.
Vitamin C and the Immune System
Our immune system constantly defends our bodies against infection and actively participates in the healing process. Research suggests a quicker response when cells are saturated with vitamin C. One study indicates that vitamin C enhances the body’s production of lymphocytes, key cells in immune activity.
Vitamin C Vitamin C has been shown to possibly help the harmful effects of nitrites, the chemical preservatives found in processed meats like ham, bacon and frankfurters. When vitamin C is present in the stomach at the same time as the nitrite, it prevents nitrites from becoming nitrosamines. Evidence also shows vitamin C may help the stomach, esophageal, lung, and skin . A suggested daily intake of 1000 mg of vitamin C as a conservative recommendation. Vitamin C and Cholesterol A three month study conducted at the University of North Carolina found that total blood cholesterol levels decreased in all subjects who supplemented with vitamin C. It was shown to be most effective in subjects with total cholesterol values above 250 per deciliter.
