September is Pain Awareness Month, giving us an opportunity to increase understanding of pain, improve conversations around pain management, and recognize the many people living with persistent pain. The International Association for the Study of Pain emphasizes that effective pain care is individualized and benefits from communication, collaboration, and shared decision making.
Pain Is More Than a Symptom
Pain is a complex experience influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. For some people, pain is short-lived and connected to an injury or illness. For others, persistent pain can affect movement, sleep, mood, energy, and daily activities.
A holistic approach does not mean ignoring the source of pain — it means looking at the whole picture. Depending on the individual and the cause of pain, supportive strategies may include appropriate physical activity, physical therapy, adequate sleep, stress management, mindfulness, nutrition, and behavioral approaches. Research supports several of these non-drug approaches for certain types of chronic pain.
Gentle Movement Matters
When appropriate for the individual, staying physically active can be an important part of pain management. Walking, swimming, tai chi, mobility work, and other low-impact activities can help maintain function while placing less stress on the joints. Why Your Pain May Not Be Coming From Where You Feel It
Have you ever wondered why your shoulder hurts when the problem may actually be coming from your neck, or why your knee starts hurting after an injury to your ankle?
Pain isn’t always felt exactly where the problem originates. This is known as referred pain, and it can occur when muscles, joints, nerves, or other tissues send pain signals to a different area of the body.
Another common reason is compensation. When one area of the body isn’t moving or functioning properly because of an injury, weakness, stiffness, or imbalance, other muscles and joints may work harder to make up for it. Over time, this extra workload can create tension, irritation, and pain in areas that weren’t originally injured. For example, an ankle injury may change the way you walk, eventually placing additional stress on the knee, hip, or low back. This is why simply treating the spot that hurts may not always address the underlying cause.
