Chewable probiotics are popular with families because they skip the capsule and the refrigerator. CHF #35C Probiotic (Chewable) 120 Tablets uses spore-forming Bacillus bacteria, which are naturally more shelf-stable than many probiotics, in a sweetened chewable base. Here is what the research says about its ingredients.
Full ingredient list (per 1 tablet): shelf-stable probiotic blend of 2 billion CFU Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus clausii. Other ingredients: xylitol, sorbitol, citric acid, natural flavor, stevia leaf extract, stearic acid. The label suggests one or two tablets daily. It does not list strain designations, the CFU of each species, or an age range.
Most probiotic bacteria are fragile: heat, moisture, and stomach acid can kill them, which is why many products need refrigeration. Bacillus species can form spores, a dormant state with a tough outer coat. A 2017 scientific review explains that spore-forming bacilli have greater tolerance and survival in the harsh environment of the digestive tract and are more stable during processing and storage than many other probiotics. That stability is what makes a room-temperature chewable tablet practical.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) notes that probiotics must be alive to work and can die during shelf life, so labels should state the CFU count through the end of shelf life. CHF #35C lists 2 billion CFU per tablet, or up to 4 billion at two tablets. ODS says many products contain 1 to 10 billion CFU per dose, and higher counts are not necessarily more effective.
Bacillus clausii has the most pediatric research of the three species. A 2018 meta-analysis of six randomized trials involving 1,298 children with acute diarrhea found that B. clausii shortened diarrhea by about 9 hours on average and shortened hospital stays by less than a day compared with control. Stool frequency showed only a non-significant trend toward improvement. One author was employed by a pharmaceutical company (Sanofi).
CHF #35C combines B. clausii with two other species and does not identify its strains, so the trial results suggest potential but do not prove the same effect. A child with severe or persistent diarrhea should be seen by a clinician rather than treated with a supplement alone.
Bacillus coagulans has been studied mostly in adults with irritable bowel syndrome, where specific strains ranked well for abdominal pain in a 2023 network meta-analysis. Bacillus subtilis is widely used in fermented foods, but human probiotic trials are limited. A 2022 review titled “Bacillus spore-forming probiotics: benefits with concerns?” points out that the safety and value of Bacillus probiotics must be judged strain by strain. In short, the species in CHF #35C are credible probiotic candidates, but the evidence for children in particular centers on B. clausii.
Xylitol and sorbitol are sugar alcohols (polyols) that sweeten the tablet without sugar. A 2016 review of sugar alcohols explains that they can cause gas and osmotic diarrhea, at least in people who are not used to them, and that the effect depends on the person and the type of polyol. Xylitol is better tolerated than sorbitol and similar polyols, and the body can adapt over time. The amounts in one or two small tablets are unlikely to cause problems for most people, but children who also eat sugar-free gum, candy, or other sweetened products may be more likely to notice loose stools.
The remaining ingredients (stevia leaf extract, citric acid, natural flavor, and stearic acid) serve as sweetener, flavoring, and tableting aids.
FDA warns that xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. In people, xylitol does not trigger insulin release, but in dogs it is absorbed quickly and can cause a powerful insulin surge and a rapid, dangerous drop in blood sugar, sometimes within 10 to 60 minutes. Signs include vomiting, weakness, staggering, collapse, and seizures. FDA specifically lists children’s and adult chewable vitamins and dietary supplements among products that may contain xylitol. Keep CHF #35C well out of reach of pets, and call your veterinarian or an animal poison control center right away if a dog eats any.
The spore-forming probiotics provide stability and a chance of surviving the stomach, while xylitol, sorbitol, and stevia make the tablet pleasant to chew without sugar. The result is a convenient, room-temperature probiotic. Its limits are the undisclosed strains and the modest research base for everyday use in healthy children.
