The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys. The adrenals are an integral part of the endocrine system. They are responsible for producing several important hormones and are critical to the stress response. They have two parts. The cortex is the outer wrapping of the gland. It produces cortisol which is a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone. The level of cortisol in the body affects allergies, wound healing, asthma, arthritis, and lupus, just to name a few. The medulla, which is the inner part of the adrenal gland, pours out epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. These hormones speed up the body’s metabolism in order to help us to cope with stress. These are the two most important hormones in the body. They govern the fight or flight response (alarm reaction) in our bodies, and are almost a direct extension of the nervous system. The adrenal glands produce their array of hormones in a complex symphony that is orchestrated by two structures in the brain called the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. When stress and poor nutrition lead to altered hormone levels, imbalance in endocrine function can lead to substantial fatigue. The kinds of stressors that tax the adrenal glands include physical or emotional trauma, excess exercise, pregnancy, chemical toxins, lack of sleep, anxiety, depression, poor diet, infections and prescription drugs.
Our CHF #24 contains a specially processed whole adrenal concentrate (bovine) in a synergistic combination of vitamin, minerals and herbs, some of which are listed below.
Vitamin-B6 is a co-factor in several of the enzymatic pathways in the adrenal cascade.
Vitamin-C is essential to the adrenal hormone cascade and manufacture of adrenal steroid hormones. It acts as an antioxidant within the adrenal cortex.
Pantothenic Acid, one of the B-complex vitamins, is essential to energy production within the adrenal glands by converting into acetyl-CoA, critical to conversion of glucose into energy. The combination of pantothenic acid with magnesium, and vitamin-C, both included in our formula, increases energy production and reduces fatigue on the adrenals.
Niacin, also a B vitamin, is necessary to form the molecular structure of certain niacin dependent coenzymes critical for several steps in the adrenal cascade.
Licorice Root, an adaptogenic herb (supports the body during stressful periods, feeds and nurtures tissues and organ systems to reverse damage done by stress, strengthens immune function and builds energy and stamina over time), known to increase energy, endurance and vitality, acts as a mild tonic to nurture the adrenals. It has strong anti-viral and anti-inflammatory action, naturally fortifies cortisone levels, helps decrease symptoms of hypoglycemia by helping to control sugar levels, improves wound healing, soothes nervous stomachs and supports immune function.
