Some of the important herbs in CHF1A are Yucca, Bromelain, Horsetail and White Willow Bark.
Yucca
Zuni, Navajo and other, Indian tribes of the Southwest use Yucca for a variety of health purposes. Yucca contains the natural steroid saponin, which has been known to be an anti-inflammatory. Yucca may help to block the release of toxins that interfere with the normal formation of cartilage
Bromelain
Is a type of enzyme called a proteolytic enzyme. It is found in pineapple juice and in the pineapple stem. Healers have used this enzyme for hundreds of years for various issues. A 2004 clinical study found that bromelain is a useful treatment for osteoarthritis due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Bromelain may also help stimulate a healthy immune system to release inflammation fighting immune system compounds. It is used for muscle soreness, pain, burns, kidney stones, and many other conditions.
Horsetail
The anti-inflammatory properties of the extract from Horsetail stems, is an effective remedy for Juvenile Arthritis. Horsetail is also known by some more names such as Bottle brush and cola de caballo. Galen, an ancient Roman physician, wrote that horsetail aided nosebleeds, arthritis, tuberculosis, bleeding ulcers, ligaments and severed tendons. Physicians in ancient China used horsetail for arthritis, hemorrhoids, dysentery and wounds. Early North Americans and immigrants made tea from horsetail for its diuretic qualities and for coughing.
White Willow Bark
It is used as an anti-inflammatory by many different Native American tribes. White Willow Bark is used like aspirin, treating infections, arthritis and pain caused by inflammation. Recent studies have shown that standardized doses of White Willow Bark may reduce pain about the same as a daily dose of Vioxx (prescription arthritis drug).
